TOPSHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Veterans and military families in Midcoast Maine received a special recognition Saturday afternoon.

First Lady Anne LePage, along with representatives from the Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services, presented medals of honor and blue star banners to veterans and their families at the Topsham American Legion.

Families with a relative serving on active duty received a blue star banner, along with a letter from the First Lady.

"I would like to thank them for being strong for their loved ones," said Ann LePage. "I think it's important to have the family strong back home so that they can carry out their mission safely, and then return home safely."

Director of the Maine Bureau of Veteran Services Peter Ogden said the bureau needs help locating and honoring Maine's veterans.

"Maine has 150 thousand living veterans today, and we're trying to recognize all of them," said Ogden. "It's a little bit of a challenge to find them all."

Living veterans, surviving family members, and blue star families are asked to contact the Bureau of Veterans Services to receive recognition.

The office can be reached by phone at 430-6035, or by email at mainebvs@maine.gov.
