Maine's Schooner "Mary Day" to Host 50 Year Anniversary Celebration at Camden Windjammer Festival

CAMDEN, Maine - Maine schooner Mary Day of Camden is celebrating 50 years since her first launch and of taking passengers sailing along the coast of Maine. Captains Barry King and Jennifer Martin will host the celebration on Sunday, September 2, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Mary Day dock in Camden. Local music and complimentary refreshments will be available for attendees. Captains King and Martin will also unveil a surprise fiftieth anniversary present for their vessel.

Camden Hills State Park recognized by Tripadvisor

AUGUSTA, Maine – Camden Hills State Park, in Camden, has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence from Tripadvisor, which bills itself as “the world’s largest travel site,” offering online advice to travelers.

The award honors “hospitality excellence,” and is given “only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews,” according to the certificate. Only 10 percent of establishments receive the award, according to the company.

Camden Hills State Park also is listed as the No. 2 attraction in the Camden area, out of 12 listed on the trip site. No. 1 is Mount Battie, which is located in the park.

Bicycle Coalition of Maine launches "BikeMaine," a major new ride

On its twentieth anniversary, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) is launching a major new 7-day bicycle event that will showcase Maine as a premier cycling destination on the East Coast. BCM is Maine’s leading voice for bicyclists with programs on safety, improved infrastructure and advocacy both in Augusta and Washington. As a result of BCM’s efforts, Maine has consistently ranked in the top ten bicycle-friendly states and as high as number two last year.

The new ride, called "BikeMaine," will be a weeklong rolling exploration of Maine with each year’s route taking place in a different part of the state. Bicyclists will camp in designated host communities each evening and eat community-prepared meals using Maine ingredients.

Hannah Scully (Saco) named 2012 Maine Games Youth Athlete of the Year

Seventeen year-old Hannah Scully, of Saco, has been named the 2012 Maine Games Youth Athlete of the Year.

Since 2003, and the Maine Games' first year in existence, this Thornton Academy senior has been the most prolific athlete in the organization's 10-year history.

In 2003, Scully, then an eight-year old baton twirler, won her first Maine Games medal (gold). Her eight-year participation record has led her to the medal podium more than 30 times.

Competing in team, solo, pairs, and two-baton events in the Maine Games State Baton Twirling Championships, Scully has been a part big part of every twirling event offered by the Pine Tree State's official State Games.

In 2004 and 2005, she also ran in the Maine Games State Track and Field Championships at Fitzpatrick Stadium, in Portland, winning a gold and two silver medals in the 50m and 100m, respectively.
