Maine trooper assaulted during trial

WISCASSET, Maine (AP) - A veteran Maine state trooper on trial for illegal sexual contact with a girl under the age of 14 has been assaulted in the courtroom.

The sheriff's office arrested 39-year-old William Harrison, of Charlestown, Mass., for assault on Thursday.

Harrison is accused of assaulting 46-year-old Gregory Vrooman of Nobleboro just as the jury in Wiscasset was preparing to issue a verdict. Authorities say no weapons were involved.

Harrison was tackled by the sheriff's department deputies and security. The Bangor Daily News reports that Vrooman was taken to the hospital for treatment of facial injuries.

Vrooman was indicted by a grand jury in February of 2011 on four counts each of unlawful sexual touching, unlawful sexual contact, four and assault and a charge of witness tampering.
